Nasal Cleansing: ‘snot a laughing matter

I’ve been using a neti pot daily since I moved to San francisco from Philadelphia in 2000. The change in environment wreaked havoc on my sinuses and my allergies became unbearable.  In Los Angeles, I’m still prone to the same seasonal sniffles that can develop into really painful sinus pressure.

Before nasal cleansing, I tried all kinds of natural solutions and even some quite chemical ones, nothing worked for long and all of the over the counter pharmaceuticals left me with ugly side effects.  Still, the best natural relief I’ve found is from my friend the neti.  I’m well aware of the recent controversy, but I personally am willing to continue using an ancient technique with a couple of isolated compications. I do however always use filtered water.

The way nasal irrigation works is quite simple.  It thins the mucus in your sinuses and flushes it out of your nasal passages.  Adding saline to the water used helps the cilia lining the nostrils and sinuses to coordinate their motion of pushing the mucus out of those areas.

I recently discovered Nasopure and had the pleasure of meeting its inventor, Dr. Hana Solomon. M.D. at this year’s Natural Products Expo in Anaheim.  Dr. Hana is a pediatrician who practiced medicine in a “mom and pop style clinic: for 18 years with her physician husband.  She is an advocate of preventative medicine and natural remedies, with a specific focus on nasal health.

Not only did the kind doctor offer up Nasopures for my daughters and me to try, but she also took her time and had a lengthy conversation with me on the topic of nasal cleansing.  Although due to being stuck on my old fashioned ceramic neti, I was hesitant to try Nasopure, Dr. Hana’s magnetic personality won me over (she’s quite the firecracker)!

My first inhibition was the material – plastic?!?  Upon reading Solomon’s book, Clearing the Air One Nose at a Time, I happily discovered that Nasopure bottles are made of a BPA free. safe, LDPE recyclable #4 plastic, free of leeching with no PVC.  Beyond care for the environment, Nasopure believes in community welfare also.  Their kits are assembled at our local sheltered workshop for disabled adults in Columbia, MO – Central Missouri Subcontracting Enterprises CMSE.

The main benefit I’ve noticed is that I can control the flow of the Nasopure better than the neti, and I don’t have to put my neck at an awkward angle.  The Nasopure is used completely upright, which makes it more comfortable and it’s shape allows for a total seal.  Nasopure is also undeniably easier to travel with.

I can’t count the times I’d wished that my allergy ridden, snot filled children would learn how to use a neti.  I hate giving them any kind of medication and they can be understandably miserable when congested.   After all, it’s a miserable feeling, one I don’t miss!  This technology makes it easy for a kid to try, especially when coupled with Dr. Hana’s book and/or instructional videos.  Although my 4 year old won’t yet go near it, my 6 year old is able to use the bottle herself and she definitely notices that it helps her – a big relief to both of us!

I highly recommend checking out the book as well.  It is full of useful information that goes above and beyond the health of your nose and sinuses.  For example, the natural tips to defeating an ear infection are so much more healthy than the antibiotics most doctors prescribe so liberally!  There is also a lot of great info for everyone from pregnant mothers to children to those with more “seasoned” noses.  The benefits for all walks of life are astounding!

Nasopure bottles are reasonably priced and widely available in North America and globally.  See their website to order or to find a brick and mortar location in your neighborhood.

Dr. Hana Solomon graced Takes a Village with a short interview, along with a discount for our readers.  Read on!

TAV:  Would you like to address the recent deaths caused by neti?

Dr. Hana:  May I send the link to my article I wrote on this very subject?

TAV:  Why, yes.  And I must add that this is a very well written article which addresses the subject well and may ease the minds of those who are wary.

TAV:  What’s your advice on getting kids started when they are hesitant?

Dr. Hana:  I have 25 yrs of experience addressing this exact issue.

Step 1: get mom and or dad to try it and see it feels good.

Step 2: not forcing, fighting, only encouragement, demonstrating, bribing, one small positive step at a time. Real instructions are age related, of course.  Here is a link to suggestions for age related patients.

TAV:  Anything you’d like to add?

Dr. Hana: I don’t care if one uses a garden hose, a turkey baster, or a neti.  I care about educating americans on how to use fewer drugs and I know nasal washing daily will help achieve this goal. Therefore Nasopure was born only b/c my patients wouldn’t use the neti.

That’s a goal I can truly get behind.  In the spirit of promoting healthful solutions Dr. Hana Solomon and Nasopure have offered Takes a Village Readers a free 4 oz. travel tote with any purchase at their website.  Just mention “takesavillage” as a comment with your order!

Here’s to breathing easier!

Kneipp: Keeps Me Going {review + coupon code}

This is hard to admit, but pregnancy hasn’t been all rainbows and unicorns for me.  I, like many other women, have had to deal with many of the unpleasantries that accompany being with child.  Now, in my third trimester those unfortunate side effects are really starting to kick in.  I’m noticing my feet are now starting to hurt if I stand too long or walk to much.  My back is starting to ache from carrying around all the extra weight my little guy has added.  These last few weeks haven’t been a picnic, so when Julie gave me to opportunity to review an all natural pain reliever, I couldn’t say yes fast enough.

Kneipp Joint Muscle Active Gel with Arnica has been a life saver.  I’ve used it on my aching feet to help get me up and going again.  It is great for use on sore, over-worked legs, pregnant or not.  I’ve also had my husband rub it on my lower back at the end of a hard day.  The cooling sensation kicks in right away taking away the burn that can sometimes accompany the ache earned after a long day.  The gel goes on smoothly and is absorbed quickly,  which works out well because I have to admit that the fragrance smells like an old man’s cologne.  Luckily the smell fades really quickly and didn’t bother me much (wish I could say the same for my husband’s opinion, I want more rub-downs!).  For me, the benefits by far outweigh the smell.

According to the Kneipp website, “quality is all-important. This means raw plant materials of first-class quality as the basis for all products, complex analysis processes and gentle processing in innovative production methods. Moreover, in Kneipp’s view, quality stands for guaranteeing the highest degree of usefulness, efficacy and safety of our products. The products, which are left in as natural a state as possible, are manufactured with the greatest of care, not unlike prescription medicines.”

This is the perfect product for me.  I’m already such a freak about anything that goes on my body, even more so now that I’m pregnant.  I feel really safe using this and can’t help but get behind the philosophy of using raw natural materials to heal.  I wish more companies made it a point to use safe materials in their products.  That would make this paranoid future mommy’s life so much easier!!

Kneipp is kindly offering Takes a Village readers 15% savings on all arnica products through April 16, 2012.  Simply enter the code Arnica12 at checkout.

Special thanks to Kneipp for providing product samples for my review!

In Praise of Purity (Coconut Water) + Discount Code!

I am the kind of gal who scours the ingredients list on every product I buy.  The fewer the better ~ not for time-saving at the market (though my daughters appreciate it), but for health purposes.  I don’t see the need to feed my family over-processed, chemically enhanced juices when Purity is available.

There’s just one ingredient on this list: Crystallized, 100% Organic coconut water. That’s right, crystallized.  Purity organic coconut water powder by YogaEarth is a powder, saving tons of packaging from hitting a landfill.  It’s also way more convenient to tote along than a can, bottle or tetra pack.  I always have a reusable water bottle on hand, so this gives me a great way to add a nutritional boost on the spot.  Not to mention adding some great flavor, customizable to your taste – add as much or as little powder as your taste buds prefer. Very cool!

I admit that I fit right in with the recent viral video depicting what people from Los Angeles say- at least in one aspect- I LOVE COCONUT WATER.  I discovered it a couple years ago and the benefits are undeniable- as is its deliciously refreshing flavor.  It is chock full of potassium – more than bananas are per serving.  Coconut water is also loaded with electrolytes, which literally will keep your body charged.

Restoring electrolytes is essential,  not only after a good workout, but also after being sick, dehydrated, or (ahem) hungover.  I give myself and my girls coconut water instead of gnarly artificial pedialyte or gatorade to get us all back in balance.  YogaEarth’s biodegradable packets are also perfect for travel.  For example, I get so dehydrated on an airplane, and these are the perfect solution as security will not confiscate them!

YogaEarth donates 1% of its profits to Kiva, a groundbreaking nonprofit which allows people to lend money, in $25 increments to great causes worldwide, such as agriculture and rebuilding.  Kiva vets the loans requested and the borrowers repay the lender through their website.  I love this concept and that YogaEarth, supports it.

In fact, this is not the only way the Southern California based company works with the community.   Their products, including organic foods, yoga gear, and natural products are designed with consumer input.  As a member of their community, you can suggest and vote on product ideas, plus receive discounts.

I’m impressed by the extra steps YogaEarth takes for the environment.  They’re striving toward zero waste, manufacture locally, and employ sustainable practices.   “The company has designed a packaging program to optimize use of recycled materials, while protecting product integrity and safety. Outer packaging is FSC-certified and 80% minimum post-consumer waste. Packaging is produced in fully wind-powered facilities.”

Pure 100% Organic Coconut Water

YogaEarth has kindly offered Takes a Village readers $5 off any order of Purity coconut Water from their Website!  Simply click on the above banner and enter takesavillage1 at checkout through April 30, 2012!

Special thanks to YogaEarth for providing delicious samples for my review, I like the product so much, I became an affiliate!

Vegan Truffle Giveaway! Nicobella: Low Sugar Heaven

You all know I’m on a mission to control my gestational diabetes without completely depriving myself.  I’ve learned quite a bit these last few weeks.  I’ve learned that rice (brown or white) is not my friend.  I can tolerate things like Ezekiel Bread, corn tortillas, and so far a piece of fruit every now and then.

One decadent treat I’m really excited about is Nicobella truffles.  These extraordinary truffles are: vegan, organic, natural, fair trade, dairy free, soy free!  With a healthy and socially conscious list like that – what’s not to like?  Oh, and they are also utterly delicious, even better than a lot of non-vegan varieties out there!

An awesome thing I’ve noticed about Nicobella truffles is that they don’t make my blood sugar sky rocket.  Now granted I’m not eating 5 a day — I’m only allowing myself one each day, after a meal.  These truffles are so rich and yummy you only need one to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Let’s face it, I’m only human and even a girl with the dreaded GB deserves a little something sweet now and then.  To be safe I also follow this meal/truffle ritual with a 30 minute walk.   I’m not saying it will work for everyone; that’s just what works for me.

I was lucky enough to meet Nichole of Nicobella at the Green Girls night out event by Eco Stiletto a few weeks ago.  Not only is she crazy talented in making tasty truffles, but she’s also a dietitian that works with women who have gestational diabetes (SCORE!).  She was sweet enough to warn me that GB is a very sensitive form of diabetes.   I didn’t know that before as I only had my mother’s type 2 diabetes to compare it to.  Her little piece of advice has worked wonders for how I approach my GB.  She has saved me a ton of frustration and has given me some peace of mind.

Nichole kindly warned me to be careful and not get carried away with the truffles (sorry Nichole, but not even you can scare me away from chocolate!).  Luckily, I’ve been ok.  I think it may have something to do with the fact that Nicobella’s truffles don’t have any of the artificial crap most conventionally made chocolates do.

Nichole was also kind enough to offer a coupon code to our awesome subscribers.  Visit Nicobella, load up your cart with healthy yummies, and enter coupon code: Village 13 to get 15% off all orders through Dec.31st.  Woot Woot!!
