Omegas, Oh My! Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega D3 Giveaway

By now we have all heard of the massive benefits of omega 3 fatty acids, for kids and adults alike.  On its website, “The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish) at least two times (two servings) a week. Each serving is 3.5 ounce cooked, or about ¾ cup of flaked fish. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines and albacore tuna are high in omega-3 fatty acids.”

Although it is better to increase omega-3 intake through one’s diet, many people do not meet their basic needs, particularly those with heart disease and those who do not eat fish.  People with high triglyceride counts should have even greater intake. The AHA recommends supplements for these groups.

The perks of fish oil capsules don’t end there, and they need not be limited to the aforementioned folks.  From my understanding, pregnant women, children, and just about everyone has something to gain by adding them to their regimen.   I’ve tried several formulas and have found a true favorite in Nordic Naturals.

Listen up:  DHA has been touted for its immense contribution to brain and vision development in the womb and through all developmental stages (remember our brains don’t fully mature until our twenties, explaining much teenage behavior).   Recent research indicates that intake of Omega-3′s during pregnancy and breastfeeding may even raise a child’s IQ, lower risk of diabetes, and improve motor function through age 7.

In the pre-school and grade school years of critical brain maturation and development, DHA and EPA taken daily, are believed to improve behavior and boost learning abilities.  New studies have also suggested that fish oil supplements could even be beneficial to the behavior of children with ADHD and autism!   Personally, I prefer natural remedies any time possible.

In addition to improving heart health, Omega 3’s are also said to reduce stress and moodiness.   Yes please!  The lesser-known GLA (gamma linolenic acid) is also thought to nourish hair and skin (even fighting acne and eczema), support joint function, balance hormones, and maintain metabolism – making us healthier inside and out! Who wouldn’t want all that?  In addition to other formulas, Nordic Naturals make fish oil supplements for every stage of human life, which are available through their website and at tons of stores.

Nordic Naturals is an extraordinarily green and sustainable company. All of the fish used in their oil is utilized for human or animal consumption.  Fish are harvested from the wild and only from abundant sources. Their California headquarters has won a slew of awards areas ranging from Socially Responsible Business to Best Taste to a Kid Kritics Seal of Approval.  Nordic’s consciousness doesn’t stop with the environment; they are also humanitarians. Their Kenai Wild Program is designed to help the impoverished Alaskan community of Cook Inlet, who were left unable to fund schools or fix roads due economic crisis in the 90′s.  They also partner with the wonderful Vitamin Angels Thrive to Five Program, which last year provided about 100 million dosas of micronutrients to malnourished kids in 28 countries, including the United States!  Who wouldn’t get behind that great cause?

WIN SOME…

Nordic Naturals is graciously offering a lucky Takes a Village reader a full size bottle of Ultimate Omega-D3!  Not only do you get all the good results discussed above, but the D3 adds some extra pizazz to your immune function and bone health.  This 60-count bottle of soft gels has a value of $28.95 and a wealth of benefit to your health!

To enter simply visit Nordic Naturals’ website and comment below with which benefit of Omega-3 is most appealing to you.

Toxic Cradle of Love

This baby of mine will be here in 15 weeks.  15 WEEKS!!!  That is really exciting and nerve wrecking at the same time.  I have a lot of stuff to do!  The number one thing is getting the nursery together – even though I have a feeling it will be a while before he sleeps in it.  As my best friend put it, “The baby basically gets a VIP pass into your bed for the first few months”.  This makes sense especially if you plan to breast feed – which I do.

Even knowing that, I’m still wanting to get it done before the little fella gets here.  Something tells me I won’t have time after his arrival.  Being the neurotic freak that I am, I started my search & some of the info I found really scared the crap out of me!

Did you know that the materials that some companies use in items such as cribs are extremely toxic?  Yes, you read that right.  I said a crib can be toxic.  The majority of cribs on the market are made of unsustainable wood, formaldehyde filled plywood, and VOC (volatile organic compounds) heavy finishes.  That infuriates me!  A crib is supposed to be a place where your new born baby, still very delicate and developing, spends most of his or her time.  Do you want your child breathing in toxins like formaldehyde?  I sure as hell don’t!

So I started my search for a safe non-toxic crib and was astounded by what I found.  I found out that if you really want something nonpoisonous, you better be ready to shell out for it.  There are some amazing cribs out there, but they are way beyond my budget (most hovering around $700-$1500).  Don’t get me wrong, there really are some gorgeous models out there, but please, I still have to furnish the rest of the nursery – so it’s just not going to happen.  After salivating for a few hours I decided to move on and get real.  Ah well, a girl can dream!

Believe me people, I have spent hours trying to find a safe crib that won’t break the bank.  As I agonize over not being able to afford these amazing cribs I’m getting more & more upset.  Why do I have to look to other countries (part of the reason for the high cost) to get a decent non-toxic crib?  There are very few companies in the US that make them.

How sad it that?  You would think that here in the good ol’ U-S-of-A we parents would expect and demand safe products for our children.  Why isn’t the government doing more to regulate the materials companies use when manufacturing products as important as cribs, or at least requiring companies to describe the possible toxins included?  I guess this is just another situation where the almighty dollar wins – and cheap, toxic, chemical laden, yet overpriced products end up on the market for us to spend our hard earned cash on.  What’s even more disheartening is that most parents don’t even know what they are exposing their babies to.  Even shopping bags have child safety warnings!! Why don’t cribs?

OK, I’ll get off my soap box now.  But I won’t put my precious child in a poisonous box to sleep in every night.  Please comment to share your thoughts – especially if you’ve come across a crib that is safe, well-crafted, and hopefully easy on the eyes as well as the wallet!

One Man’s Rags are Another’s Gucci: Beauty of the Clothing Swap

Ever look in your closet and feel completely uninspired? Wish you could just trade in your entire wardrobe without the cost?  Why not?  I’m betting many of your pals are feeling the same clothing doldrums at any given moment.  Time for a clothes swap!

The basics are pretty, well, basic.  Invite a bunch of friends, their friends, and their friends’ friends.  More people =  more loot!  Have everyone clean out their closets.  Men’s, women’s, and kids clothes can all be welcomed, but of course you can limit it to one area if you prefer.  You don’t have to stop at clothes either, space permitting, you can include all kinds of household items or you can stick to a theme, i.e. children’s books.

I’ve been to several variations, some with rules, some free-for-all.  I personally prefer the latter.   Some people like to keep it “fair” and structured, showing each item to everyone and deciding who wants it most and monitoring the amount of items brought.  Sure, this is a fun way to do it, just not my personal style.  I love a good, no-holds barred pile up… guests place their items in piles, organized by department: Guys, Gals, Kids.  Everyone digs in and grabs what they want!  Sure, it’s less organized and we may leave with less than we brought or vice versa, but there’s a certain clothing karma that applies to these events and in my experience, the act of purging your buildup of unworn outfits and accessories is extremely cathartic.  Plus, if you plan swaps on the regular you may score big the next time around!  My crew tries to get it together seasonally and to integrate a potluck for a full on community event.

What to do with the surplus of unwanted items?  Donate them of course!  Not only is a great thing to do for those in need, but the host can use the receipts for a tax deduction- another way to score!

Stephanie’s Two Cents:

Ooooh, I LOVE me a clothing swap!  I have always heard of them being held but had never been invited to attend one.  Enter- Julie.  She invited me to a clothing swap last year, hosted by Alex (also of TAV) and I have to admit, I’ve been hooked since.  I’m a terrible hoarder when it comes to clothes and tend to have a big problem getting rid of items that no longer fit (I’ll lose the weight one day) or are no longer my style (neon blue mini skirt with orange feather trim.) Yes, I attended a few raves in my day).  Some how going to  a clothing swap is the just the motivation I need to clean out those unneeded items.

Not only have I scored a few great items at clothing swaps but I also get a kick out of seeing other people go crazy over my ignored and neglected items. It’s like giving them a new life.  So yes, one man’s duds are indeed another mans treasure!

Rajina’s Take:

I recently attended my first clothes swap and had a wonderful time! It was a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, share stories, and enjoy some good food.  The best part however, was all of the space freed up in my closet.  I’m the type that keeps my stuff forever. My husband on the other hand, purges constantly and donates his stuff.  With a clothes swap, it’s nice to give people the chance to get some new clothes that they would otherwise have to pay for at a consignment/thrift store.  I personally walked away with a pair of Levi’s.  Perfect fit, no hemming necessary!

Can’t wait to see what’s in store next time…

Custom Kumquat Salsa: Make it Yours!

As I sit here looking out into my garden I see that my Kumquat tree is starting to look really loaded down with those yummy looking little oranges.  Usually I’d get really excited about making a marmalade or even a cake, but –alas– my dreaded gestational diabetes is getting in the way this season.  So, I started scouring the internet looking for something to do with my kumquats that doesn’t include tons of sugar.  In my search I found a great recipe for kumquat salsa at Simple Recipes.  The recipe is as follows:

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups chopped cleaned and thinly sliced kumquats
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • Dash of cayenne pepper
  • Pinch of kosher salt

METHOD

Combine all ingredients. Add more or less red pepper & cayenne to desired heat. Let sit for 1 hour for the flavors to blend fully.

Makes about 2 1/2 cups of salsa.

Great served with steak or seafood such as halibut, black sea bass, or salmon.

That all sounds fantastic doesn’t it?  But I’m one if those people that loves to mess with recipes, especially if it’s something like salsa.  I make a few kick ass salsa’s, so this is one area that I’m pretty confident in.

So, let’s get jiggy wit it:

Instead of red peppers flakes – let’s add a diced jalapeno (a habanero would be great if you like your salsa spicy).  I may even add some diced avocado because I really like the way the flavor tends to wake up when added to citrus.  The fun thing about salsa is that you can mold it into what ever your little heart desires.  If you choose to have a sweeter salsa maybe add some more fruit. Pineapple would probably work great.  Looking for something more savory? How about adding corn, or black beans?  The possibilities are endless.

I’m sure most of you could easily come up with a fews ways to make this recipe your own, so have at it!  Let me know if you create a super magical kumquat recipe.  Don’t be greedy; I just shared my tips with you!  Now get out there and have some fun with kumquats!

Ask the Experts: How to Stop a Chronic Hitter!

TAV Reader:  A friend’s 3 year old daughter has been hitting as long as we can remember.  She was even waking her dad up with a slap to the face for a while!  The hitting is not limited to her parents; I’ve seen her hit other children as well.

She was not in any kind of daycare when it began and her parents are extremely mellow and passive.  They have tried time-outs,  which did not work, and restraining the child, which worked momentarily, but did not change her behavior overall.

Please give me some advice to pass on to her parents, who are at their wit’s end!  Thanks!

Merriam:  So, if this seems innate, it will be tough to break, but not impossible.  Since it is clear that consequences are not effective, they should try rewards, but it could take a while, and they need to stick to it.

First, they decide on a reward that can be immediate, and meaningful.  For example skittles, m&ms, stickers, – something they know she loves.  Then, every time she doesn’t hit in a situation she has been know to hit before, they reward her, and tell her how proud they are that she did not hit.

If she has a playdate over, preface by telling her “if you don’t hit today, you will get your reward!” and then lather her with praise.  If before bed, tell her “if you wake daddy up with kisses, not hitting, you get your reward” etc.  The prefacing helps to remind her of the behavior that is expected, and the reward reinforces the good behavior.

Kids WANT to do well for us, they love it when we are proud of them and it is a greater motivator than when we are disappointed.  Some parents balk at the candy approach for obvious health concerns.  Some balk at the reward system because they feel it is akin to bribery.  But if the behavior is that much of a concern, this is more likely to work than punishment.  Let me know if they try it, and how it goes.

Melissa:  I would also add that if the parents are too passive and mellow it will be very important for them to “embody” a totally opposite stance when the child hits.  This may be something that does not feel comfortable to them.

It is important when the child hits them for them to hold the child firmly on her shoulders so they can look into her eyes and say, “This is unacceptable”.  It has to come with an energy and a look that lets the child know that mom and dad are serious.

Sometimes when it is counter nature for the parents to be authoritative then a child will really test boundaries to make sure that they are safe.  Part of loving our children is to be firm and draw these very definitive boundaries with them.

Dear Readers, Please comment with your experiences with a child who hits.  What discipline methods have not worked and which have been successful?

Chocolate + Vegan + Gluten Free = Delicious (Seriously)

This chocolate cake is inspired from Chef Sergio at Xinalani Eco Resort in Mexico.  This cake is divine!   Originally specified to use regular flour, I have altered the recipe to be Gluten Free.  Not only is it GF, but also Vegan.  The cake tastes incredible and the texture is perfect, yes even for a GF and Vegan Cake.  All you need to do is add your favorite icing and you are ready to knock the socks off of all your friends and family.

Chocolate cake

    serves 12

2 ½ cups Almond Flour

1 ¼ cup coco powder

2 ½ cups sugar

12 oz firm tofu

1 ¼ cup soy or almond milk

½ cup canola oil

½  Tbs vanilla

1 ¼ cup water

2  bananas

In a large bowl mix all the dry ingredients and set aside.

Put all the wet ingredients,  except for the oil, together in a blender and mix well.  Add the oil a to the dry ingredients, then add the wet mixture and incorporate all the ingredients together.

Drowning in my Baby Registry

Now is the time when I’m supposed to be putting together my baby registry, and I have to admit I’m stressing out about it.  I know – most of you are thinking: “What’s the big deal? Just ask for free shit already!”  But every time I start to research I get really overwhelmed.  I’d like to choose the safest products for my baby, but it just seems like consumerism overload.  The fact that I am already super anal about anything that goes on my own skin is making this much more difficult.  I wouldn’t ever use Johnson & Johnson’s chemical laden products on myself — much less my baby, but that’s a whole different post.

Something as simple as searching for a car seat makes me practically break out in hives.  There are hundreds to choose from!  Never mind walking into a store like Babies R Us – that place is insane! Looking at all these advertisements is making me wonder:  Are these companies purposely feeding off of a parent’s anxiety to keep their precious cargo safe?

It reminds me of when I was planning my wedding.  Companies know that, like your wedding day, having a child is another (if not more) important time in your life, and they know that most people will shell out lots of their hard earned cash to make it special.  They thrive on our inexperience & fears, and they make millions.  But do I really need all this stuff to keep my baby safe and happy?  Are 10 different pacifiers really necessary?

After spending the last 3 years painstakingly sifting through my mothers “collection” of various items (the accidental accumulation of over 30 years of junk), I don’t really care to open my life up to that clutter again.  It just seems so unnecessary.  At this point I’m more concerned with quality over quantity.  I’ve attended too many baby showers where I’ve seen my friends get lots of super “cute” yet super unnecessary items.  Yes, I’m sure the $50 tiny cowboy boots are going to look super cute on the baby, but I’d rather have a nursing pillow thank you.

Luckily, I have quite a few friends who feel the same way I do.  Fortunately for me these friends are also having kids and going through their own trial & error that I’m benefiting from.   I have an awesome like-minded friend that is planning to share her list with me and I’m so excited to get it!

Now I’m turning to you my fellow villagers.  Would you help me out here?  Would you please take the time to comment about the products that made your life easier and you just couldn’t live with out?  This overwhelmed future mommy would really appreciate it.

+++++++++++

Special thanks to Yvonne Niedergesasess for sharing her amazing registry thus saving me hours of research and anxiety.  I am forever indebted to you.

Giveaway! Sweets for Your Sweet ~ Dolci: Italy’s Sweets Cookbook

With Valentine’s Day creeping around the corner, some of you may be feeling all lovey dovey and wanting to express your admiration for a special some one.  What better way to do this than to create a rich masterpiece in the kitchen?  Although I’m not a huge fan of V-Day, I do love me some dessert.

Food historian and author Francine Segan delights your eyes and palate with a tour of Italia via an array of sweet treats in her book Dolci:  Italy’s Sweets.  Her cred couldn’t be much more serious; she is the USA Ambassador for the Italian Confectioners and Pasta Association.

Published by Abrams imprint Stewart, Tabori, & Chang this book will not disappoint in its range.  From the expected (cannoli, biscotti) to the lesser known (Sicilian pasta crisps, lemon brioche”rose” cake), these recipes are less daunting than expected.  Mostly simple recipes, calling for easy to come by ingredients with extraordinary results.  The pasta crisps are simple, crispy, and downright addictive.

With recipes aged from the renaissance  to modern day, Segan doesn’t skimp on the fine details.  Each concoction  is headed with its region of origin,  an informative blurb, and an amazing proverb, in both Italian and its English translation.  A favorite of mine is “le buone parole non rompono i denti.” or “Saying something kind won’t break your teeth.”.  So true, and so much fun to say with a makeshift Italian accent.

Valentine’s Day or any day, if you’d like to impress an old pal or you’re looking to “rompere il ghiaccio” with a new one.  (that’s “break the ice,” folks) this hardcover 208 page book will get you there and is a beautiful addition to any kitchen.  Here’s two lucky readers’ chance to win one of their own.
