Who we are

In Praise of Purity (Coconut Water) + Discount Code!

I am the kind of gal who scours the ingredients list on every product I buy.  The fewer the better ~ not for time-saving at the market (though my daughters appreciate it), but for health purposes.  I don’t see the need to feed my family over-processed, chemically enhanced juices when Purity is available.

There’s just one ingredient on this list: Crystallized, 100% Organic coconut water. That’s right, crystallized.  Purity organic coconut water powder by YogaEarth is a powder, saving tons of packaging from hitting a landfill.  It’s also way more convenient to tote along than a can, bottle or tetra pack.  I always have a reusable water bottle on hand, so this gives me a great way to add a nutritional boost on the spot.  Not to mention adding some great flavor, customizable to your taste – add as much or as little powder as your taste buds prefer. Very cool!

I admit that I fit right in with the recent viral video depicting what people from Los Angeles say- at least in one aspect- I LOVE COCONUT WATER.  I discovered it a couple years ago and the benefits are undeniable- as is its deliciously refreshing flavor.  It is chock full of potassium – more than bananas are per serving.  Coconut water is also loaded with electrolytes, which literally will keep your body charged.

Restoring electrolytes is essential,  not only after a good workout, but also after being sick, dehydrated, or (ahem) hungover.  I give myself and my girls coconut water instead of gnarly artificial pedialyte or gatorade to get us all back in balance.  YogaEarth’s biodegradable packets are also perfect for travel.  For example, I get so dehydrated on an airplane, and these are the perfect solution as security will not confiscate them!

YogaEarth donates 1% of its profits to Kiva, a groundbreaking nonprofit which allows people to lend money, in $25 increments to great causes worldwide, such as agriculture and rebuilding.  Kiva vets the loans requested and the borrowers repay the lender through their website.  I love this concept and that YogaEarth, supports it.

In fact, this is not the only way the Southern California based company works with the community.   Their products, including organic foods, yoga gear, and natural products are designed with consumer input.  As a member of their community, you can suggest and vote on product ideas, plus receive discounts.

I’m impressed by the extra steps YogaEarth takes for the environment.  They’re striving toward zero waste, manufacture locally, and employ sustainable practices.   “The company has designed a packaging program to optimize use of recycled materials, while protecting product integrity and safety. Outer packaging is FSC-certified and 80% minimum post-consumer waste. Packaging is produced in fully wind-powered facilities.”

Pure 100% Organic Coconut Water

YogaEarth has kindly offered Takes a Village readers $5 off any order of Purity coconut Water from their Website!  Simply click on the above banner and enter takesavillage1 at checkout through April 30, 2012!

Special thanks to YogaEarth for providing delicious samples for my review, I like the product so much, I became an affiliate!

Real Women Have Curves (Even more when Pregnant)

I’m not a skinny girl.  I have never been a skinny girl.  Even as a pre-pubesent child I had a butt that earned me the name “nalgona” (which roughly translates to “girl with a big butt”) from family members.   I’m not in any way complaining.  Being raised in the Latin culture, this is something to be proud of, and I always have been.  I love my curves!

That’s not to say that I don’t sometimes get down on myself if I get a little too curvy, which can happen really easily.  I am a Mexican-American woman and you all know my peeps can make some seriously good food, and I love food!

With that being said, keeping myself at a healthy weight can sometimes be a challenge.  For me, it’s not all about the superficial aspect of staying thin (Now I’m no saint. Like most woman I too get upset if my jeans get a little too tight), but I have some seriously messed up genetics to contend with if I gain too much weight.  I’ve written about my challenges with gestational diabetes before, and many of you know how difficult that can be.  Even pre-pregnancy, if I gained too much weight I’d end up borderline diabetic.  So yes, staying on target has always been an issue for me.   Luckily, I do like to eat healthy (most of the time), and I love to exercise.  That made this challenge doable.

Then I got pregnant.  This is the one time in a women’s life when it is acceptable to gain weight.  Actually, if you don’t gain enough you get in trouble.  That’s not a problem with me – bring it!!!  Yet, in my second trimester, as I grew bigger and bigger, I have to admit that it caused some turmoil.  I knew I was supposed to be gaining weight, but there was still a side of me that was having a hard time accepting it.  I knew that gaining weight is part of the process of having a child, but I couldn’t help  feeling vain – even allowing it to bother me. But let’s get real folks –  no one of normal body size likes to gain too much weight.

Now in my third trimester, I’m completely in awe of my body.  Just knowing what’s happening inside of me and how everything is coming together to create a human being is incredible.  When you think about it, your body morphing to accommodate a growing child is really an extraordinary time.   I’ve also become really attached to this belly of mine.  I realize that this is the only time in my life that I am going to look like this, and I want to honor this brief period.  I’ve seen way too many women get down on themselves and cover up in tent-like clothing during their pregnancy.  In a society when so much importance is placed on being thin (a topic for another post), I can see how that is possible.  Yet, I’m not one for a pity party so I’ve enlisted the help of a good friend.

Luckily for me, I have an amazingly talented friend Joy of Matching Hats Photography.  She also has a deep appreciation for the pregnant body.  She, along with her equally talented husband Austin, have photographed numerous pregnant couples.  The two of them are fantastic at capturing precious moments in peoples lives (weddings, babies, as well as belly bump photos), and are going to do a photo shoot featuring my husband, me,  and my ever growing belly.  How great is that?

This is a really exciting project for me.  Not only will I end up with some touching memories,  but you too will also benefit from Joy’s talent.  She is planning on putting together a “How To” post to explain how you folks can get equally fantastic photos of yourself at home.  So stay tuned…

Ask the Experts: Discipline some one else’s kid?!?!

TAV Reader:  When your child is playing with a friend who is bullying and misbehaving, how should you handle the situation if the other parent doesn’t intervene?  This recently happened with a friend’s almost 3 year old daughter, the other parent obviously saw her daughter grab a toy from another child.  The other child was very upset, but the grabber’s mom didn’t do anything about it.

Melissa:  It is never a comfortable situation if another parent is not disciplining their child and your child is the victim of their misbehavior.  I think it is important to intervene and teach your child how to stand up for themselves.  You want to role model that it is NOT okay for people to act unkindly towards others.

I would simply get down to the child’s level and tell the grabber that it is not okay to take a toy out of your child’s hand and to please give it back.

If the child is persistent and will not listen to you, the next step would be to confront the mother. It is never to early to teach our children to stand up for themselves!!!!

Dear Readers, Please comment with your experiences with unresponsive parents.  What have you encountered and how did you handle the situation?

Remember, Melissa is here to answer your behavioral questions!  Please feel free to ask at: experts@takesavillage.net or via a comment below.

Move Over Hello Kitty, There’s Some One Cuter! Yumi & Aoki ~ Book Review

Beloved Chronicle Books brings another adorable yet educational collection to the kid crowd!

Meet Yumi and Aoki, characters in Annalore Parot’s Kokeshi series.  These adorable dolls give young readers a colorful and cultural tour of modern day Japan.

Aoki and Yumi are two separate books, each presenting an adventure for its title character.  Aoki travels via high speed rail to visit her friend in Tokyo while Yumi attends a costume party with friends.  Both are innovative and adorable, featuring extraordinary die-cuts and tons of flaps to lift, revealing enough tiny details to keep a child riveted for many repeat reads.

The target age for this pair is 4-8. My four year old has been using hers as a portable dollhouse, toting Aoki around and interacting with the characters and props, such as the bento boxes which open to reveal sushi and green tea cake accompanied by fruit and some floral green tea.

The books are inspired by historic wooden Japanese Kokeshi dolls.  Rumor (Wikipedia) has it that these dolls” were originally made during the middle of the Edo period (1600–1868) to be sold to people who were visiting the hot springs in the north-east of the country.”

Annalore Parot is a designer and illustrator living in France. Her adorable creations seem destined to become a trend with the kid crowd.  They’re cute enough to draw them in and detailed enough to hold their interest.

I’m looking forward to checking out Parot’s other title in this group, Kimonos, as well as the accompanying journal and note cards.  I know something my daughter will be getting for her birthday this year!

Annalore Parot’s Kokeshi books are available directly through Chronicle Books or through Amazon, via the link to the right.

Special thanks to Chronicle Books for the advance copies for my review!

What’s in a name?…………Everything

As I approached  the playground at my daughter’s preschool the other day, I heard her teacher call out “Calliope your mom’s here!”  Hearing my daughter’s polysyllabic name spoken out loud caused my heart to crow with delight.

Strange as it may sound, the only aspect of my daughter starting preschool that I quite literally dreaded, was anticipating how I’d deal with the, seemingly, inevitable adoption of a nickname for her.   But, as she is now getting settled into her 3rd month of preschool and things are getting comfortable, I am jumping for joy that no nickname has yet made an appearance.  During my daughter’s first week of school, there was some discussion about abbreviating her 4 syllable name to CiCi, Cali, or some other butchered version. Her teachers were concerned that ‘Calliope’ might be too difficult for the other children to pronounce.  They gently prodded, “Well, what do you call her at home?” To which I bristled and replied simply,  ”We call her….her name.”

Let me provide some background on my particular sensitivity to this subject.  I had THE longest full name in my h.s. graduating class.  My full maiden name has 29 letters, 9 syllables, and a hyphen (my struggles with my LAST name are a tale for another day).  As a child and adolescent I constantly had my first name abbreviated to the only slightly shorter (by one syllable) “Gabby,” which coincidentally and appropriately described my personality, then…and now!   But what child wants their nickname synonymous with a less than desirable, personal trait?  A kid with an overbite doesnt want to be nicknamed “Bucky”, for instance.  And yet, no matter how much I hinted, and even demanded to be called by my full name, the dreaded nickname always reappeared.  Eventually, I begrudgingly accepted the reality that the nickname was here to stay. And even tried to take ownership of it..”My name is Gabby and I live up to it.”  But, I’ve always insisted upon never being introduced by my nickname.

I knew when I chose my daughter’s name, that I’d be saddling her with this same burden.  Hers is not only a long name but one that can be easily mispronounced.  But the story behind her naming makes it so that I hope she is proud of it, and won’t tolerate having it abbreviated.

As a little girl I was a HUGE fan of Greek Mythology, and when I stumbled upon the name “Calliope” (incidentally, the Muse of eloquence, heroic poetry, and beautiful voice), I fell in love.   I resolved that if I ever had a daughter, that would be her name.  Fast forward a couple of decades, to the day I found out I was pregnant with a baby girl.  I had lost my mother to Cancer a year before I got pregnant, and was left with many conflicting emotions about my recent loss and the news that I was expecting.

The day my mom passed away, a small hummingbird came and sat on a branch near me and my sister.  I turned to my sister and said “That’s mom’s spirit.  She wants us to know its going to be okay.”  The notion of our mother’s spirit being represented by a hummingbird stuck.  So imagine my utter disbelief when several months into the pregnancy, I looked up alternate meanings for the name “Calliope” only to discover… that it is a species of hummingbird.  People often speak of “signs” – I don’t think the Universe could have provided me with a more clear cut message.  Not only were things going to be okay, they were meant to be.  I truly believe that my daughter’s name is her destiny.  So why would I, or one day she, want to see it changed to suit the preferences of  the lazy-tongued?

These days naming is almost a sport, with parents giving their kids atypical and unique names like, Kennedy, Addison, and Sparrow.  Celebrities especially seem to be leading the way with this trend.  As society becomes accepting of longer and/or more unusual names, does this mean our kids are less likely to have nicknames? Perhaps.  Does it matter?  I think so.

A great deal of our identity is wrapped up in our names.   Would I have been so chatty if I’d been named something else?  Would it be harder to stand up for myself now, if I hadn’t had to stand up for my name?  Religion, cultural and ethnic heritage are huge factors in naming, but so are our unique life experiences.  I think nicknames strip us of a big part of this identity and uniqueness.

Now of course there are people who like or even insist upon having a nickname.  I just don’t happen to be one of them.  But I do understand that there is a familiarity afforded by the nickname that can even be termed endearment.  And while I don’t think nicknames should be yet another issue tacked onto the banner of political correctness, I would say that the next time you encounter someone with a long or unusual name, that you might be inclined to shorten, inquire as to what their preference is first.  Because in asking someone to sacrifice one little syllable, you might really be asking them to give up a big piece of who they are.

Giveaway! Chalk it Up to Bright Star Kids – Erasable Chalkboard Household Labels

I am downright obsessive about reusing every glass jar I come across in the kitchen.  It keeps them out of the recycling bin and keeps our food out of harmful plastic bags or containers.  I also like the look of the various shaped and sized jars in my cabinet.  In an effort to get organized, I’ve been transferring all of my bagged, dry ingredients into the massive jar collection I’ve compiled.  Now, I’ve discovered a way to be even more orderly.

Instead of wasting paper labels that will eventually leave an annoying sticky residue on all of my beloved jars, I’ve discovered Bright Star Kids’ Chalkboard Household Labels.  I love these things, I really do.  With a slightly rough vinyl-like texture, the recommended Stabillo Chalk Pencil also available on the Bright Star website in red, yellow, or white doesn’t smudge easily or rub off too quickly.  A quick wipe with a damp cloth, however, removes any hint of the container’s previous contents and you’re ready to relabel, just like that.

I was already a fan of Bright Star’s school label kits, with which my girls have claimed most of their earthly possessions, and now I get to have my own functional fun with these waterproof, dishwasher, and fridge/ freezer safe goodies.  Maybe, if they’re lucky, I’ll save a few for the kids to write on….

Bright Star Kids is an Australian based company with amazingly fast, low cost shipping to the US and elsewhere.  They also have a great fundraiser program - schools and other programs receive a generous 15% cut of all sales made!

Win Some!

Bright Star Kids is kindly giving one Takes a Village reader his or her very own Chalkboard Labels kit, including 32 Small & 8 Medium Labels!

The Future’s So Bright…

We had a wonderfully productive week at the Village.  We were lucky enough to attend the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim.  It was a truly motivating experience, meeting like-minded activists and entrepreneurs while discovering innovative new products to share with our readers.

We attended a press breakfast where chef Tyler Florence of the Food Network (and so much more) gave us the lowdown on Sprout, his organic baby food line and discussed his views on getting children to eat healthier whole foods.  Don’t worry, we’ll let you in on his secrets!

At a breakfast hosted by Nordic Naturals, we also connected with the lovely and inspiring Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, Executive Director and CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World, a favorite children’s advocacy organization here at Takes a Village.  We are super excited to announce that we will be joining their blogger network so we’ll be able to give you the inside scoop on how they’re helping to remove toxins from our children’s lives and what you can to do to help in your home and in the outside world!

Stay tuned for more on Tyler, Healthy Child Healthy World, and some fantastic reviews and giveaways we have in the works!

We’re looking forward to working together with all of you to ensure that each next generation learns to be more socially and ecologically conscious than the last.

Omegas, Oh My! Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega D3 Giveaway

By now we have all heard of the massive benefits of omega 3 fatty acids, for kids and adults alike.  On its website, “The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish) at least two times (two servings) a week. Each serving is 3.5 ounce cooked, or about ¾ cup of flaked fish. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines and albacore tuna are high in omega-3 fatty acids.”

Although it is better to increase omega-3 intake through one’s diet, many people do not meet their basic needs, particularly those with heart disease and those who do not eat fish.  People with high triglyceride counts should have even greater intake. The AHA recommends supplements for these groups.

The perks of fish oil capsules don’t end there, and they need not be limited to the aforementioned folks.  From my understanding, pregnant women, children, and just about everyone has something to gain by adding them to their regimen.   I’ve tried several formulas and have found a true favorite in Nordic Naturals.

Listen up:  DHA has been touted for its immense contribution to brain and vision development in the womb and through all developmental stages (remember our brains don’t fully mature until our twenties, explaining much teenage behavior).   Recent research indicates that intake of Omega-3′s during pregnancy and breastfeeding may even raise a child’s IQ, lower risk of diabetes, and improve motor function through age 7.

In the pre-school and grade school years of critical brain maturation and development, DHA and EPA taken daily, are believed to improve behavior and boost learning abilities.  New studies have also suggested that fish oil supplements could even be beneficial to the behavior of children with ADHD and autism!   Personally, I prefer natural remedies any time possible.

In addition to improving heart health, Omega 3’s are also said to reduce stress and moodiness.   Yes please!  The lesser-known GLA (gamma linolenic acid) is also thought to nourish hair and skin (even fighting acne and eczema), support joint function, balance hormones, and maintain metabolism – making us healthier inside and out! Who wouldn’t want all that?  In addition to other formulas, Nordic Naturals make fish oil supplements for every stage of human life, which are available through their website and at tons of stores.

Nordic Naturals is an extraordinarily green and sustainable company. All of the fish used in their oil is utilized for human or animal consumption.  Fish are harvested from the wild and only from abundant sources. Their California headquarters has won a slew of awards areas ranging from Socially Responsible Business to Best Taste to a Kid Kritics Seal of Approval.  Nordic’s consciousness doesn’t stop with the environment; they are also humanitarians. Their Kenai Wild Program is designed to help the impoverished Alaskan community of Cook Inlet, who were left unable to fund schools or fix roads due economic crisis in the 90′s.  They also partner with the wonderful Vitamin Angels Thrive to Five Program, which last year provided about 100 million dosas of micronutrients to malnourished kids in 28 countries, including the United States!  Who wouldn’t get behind that great cause?

WIN SOME…

Nordic Naturals is graciously offering a lucky Takes a Village reader a full size bottle of Ultimate Omega-D3!  Not only do you get all the good results discussed above, but the D3 adds some extra pizazz to your immune function and bone health.  This 60-count bottle of soft gels has a value of $28.95 and a wealth of benefit to your health!
